I discovered this website today and immediately joined. I was born and raised in Allentown, PA. My dad spoke a little Deitsh and wanted to start teaching it to me when I was about 6 yrs. old, but I would have none of it. Now I am much, much older and live in Bradenton, FL. and wish that I had cooperated.
My wife is an Irish Catholic and has friends in Ireland and America that are experts in Gaelic. The Irish government and Irish Catholics encourage keeping Gaelic alive. We attended a Mass in Ireland that was completely in Gaelic.
This is fine, but it makes me sad that my heritage seems to be dying. Geepers, its now hard to find Shoo-Fly Pie in Eastern PA, except in Amish markets. I guess its too late to pass a law in PA that makes speaking Deitsch mandatory, and I wouldn't be for that anyway. But I can do my part in learning more hoch Deutch and start learning some Deitsh.
It will be slow as I am too late smart, and being retired don't have as much time as before.
schoenen Dank!
