This WP article includes the terms Faernsehner, Guckkaschde and Faerngucker in addition to Guckbax. I'm told that the article was written by someone who learnt Standard European German and then learnt PD, and that older speakers who grew up with the dialect use either Guckbax or TV. Apparently a lot of younger writers have learnt Standard European German and then learn the Pennsylvanian dialect, and will often use PD versions European German words in the dialect. Thus we have a situation where native PD speakers speak a more anglicised platter than those scholars and young writers. Older speakers nearly always English loan word for new inventions/terms (among other things), but making a PD version of the European German term or creating a distinct PD term such as Wedderfresser for computer, both are more German sounding options. Question of the poll: Should the scholars be criticised for bringing European Germans terms into PD (which would likely also be in Pfälzich, maybe in different form), or praised for avoiding English terms where they know the German equivalent?

I wish I could help you but I'm just trying to learn some PD phrases and I'm sad to see that there isn't much activity on this board. I have a request listed in the translation request section. Perhaps you could assist me in the proper PD phrase that my Grandmother used to say at the end of grace before a meal. She's long gone and none of my family that's left speak PD. Thanks so much, Mike

Ask me for help? No, better ask someone whose first language is PD.

I don't really have a problem with Guckbax. Is "gucke" Pfälzich? It sounds English to me. TV is another matter. It just doesn't sound right using such a blatant English word.
I do like the PD translations of English words, such as Grundsau. I would say that is my preferred option. Rather than importing English or HG words, just try to create a PD version.
